Workplace studies have played a prominent role in the field of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) over the past 20 years. More recently with the rise of the Quantified-Self movement, the workplace studies have also started to look into new, sometimes playful, techniques in engaging users and collecting subjective data. In this talk I present “Quantified Enterprise” a platform that aims to uncover hidden dynamics of modern enterprises including various space/people metrics and their interplays, through network-sensing and crowd-sourcing. I present insights from our long-term deployment of this platform in two of Bell Labs offices in Europe. I demonstrate how such a platform could be used to derive social signals (e.g., interactions, happiness, and mood) at workplace and how these information could act as collective and personalised behavioural feedback to the employees themselves.
Afra Mashhadi is a senior research scientist at Bell Laboratories. Her research focuses in ubiquitous computing where she leverages human behavioural patterns to design human-centric systems; and HCI where she aims to uncover the perception of users’s interactions with such systems. In particular her main focus is on CrowdSensing which refers to the data collection methodology where information is gathered from the participants through either explicit CROWD-sourcing or implicit pervasive SENsing. Results of her research have been published in top-tier conferences (Percom, CHI, CSCW, Ubicomp) and journals, and trialled as part of multiple deployments in European projects and private entities such as WebSummit 2015. Afra is also an honorary researcher at UCL (University College London) where she obtained her PhD degree.
