With a highly collaborative approach, the studio of Samuel Stubblefield merges unusual materials and conditions such as living plants, ancient boats, reusable suborbital rockets, artificial intelligence, computer vision, earthquakes, jellyfish, real-time data from nature, miles of bungee cord, concrétions de Fontainebleau, electroencephalograms, forests, architecture, transducers, orchestras, mixed reality, oceans, clouds, the internet, custom robotics, trains, the sun, naturally-occurring landform anomalies, the metaverse, time, opera singers, mediocre poetry, designed urban conditions, magnetospheric plasma, forgotten civic spaces, rain, phones, handcrafted software algorithms, and humans.
Stubblefield uses his studio to “relentlessly pursue intuitive curiosities,” seeing his practice as a holistic look at art, music, performance, and architecture, often in conjunction with technologies developed within the studio. This broad inquisitiveness has made the studio known for applying AI, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, and other advanced technologies to many aspects of its work. The artist often uses technology to connect people with “the unseen aspects of nature” in an attempt to build deep understanding and respect for each other, our planet, and our cosmic context.

Samuel Stubblefield has created art and situations for organizations such as Art Basel Miami, Centre Pompidou, Domaine de Boisbuchet, The Chicago Architecture Biennial, The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Museum, The European Cultural Centre during the Venice Biennale, The European Space Agency, X, Cynthia-Reeves Gallery at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, The National Building Museum in Washington D.C., NASA, and many others.
Stubblefield has exhibited visual, sonic, performative, interactive, and immersive works alongside artists such as Marina Abramović, Carl Andre, Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons, Yoko Ono, Keith Sonnier, Hank Willis Thomas, Richard Tuttle, and Lawrence Weiner. The artist has composed music and performed live with a number of Grammy-Award- winning artists, symphonies, and choruses, including vocalists from The Brooklyn Youth Chorus, The New York Metropolitan Opera, and numerous musicians and bands.
The studio has multiple awards for its work in the field of architecture and design across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The studio operates out of New York and Seattle and maintains a global network of distinguished collaborators.
